How to Teach Sight Singing Like a Boss

It only took me almost a year, but I’m finally unlocking my sight singing secrets. Over my career, I’ve figured out how to get those elusive perfect scores at solofest even from my non band and orchestra kids.

A little background on my curriclum. It’s Music Learning Theory adjacent, but you do not need to have any previous MLT knowledge to use it. I don’t use the MLT counting system in here and just focus on its use of tonic and dominant patterns. I set up the curriclum in a way where progression is fast and you have the options to use any of my graphics in any way you choose.

Example: Below in a skillwork page, it says “Skillwork Graphic 7A”. In a corresponding folder that comes with the eBook, you’ll find the abovc example as a standalone imagine. No more trying to scan to get images and examples into the slides and worksheets you want to create.

I teach in New York, so I specifcally leveled out my sight singing practice examples to NYSSMA standards. I myself couldn’t find them anywhere, so I’ve worked really hard creating more own that works with the state levels. If you want some insight in how it works in my classroom, I have an entire sight singing playlist on TikTok.
